His Chardonnay from the Grand Cru Blanchot site opens in the glass with notes of orange, apricot, pastry and white flowers. Full-bodied and velvety on the palate, with lots of fruit and fine acidity, it develops enormous power and depth on the finish.
He has now been running his own winery since 2008 and is known for the highly mineral, straightforward and fresh Chablis. They always wonderfully show the expression of each individual terroir and vintage. His wines are often a little austere when young, but are blessed with great ageing potential.
Piuze often harvests early. Earlier than most in Chablis. He wants to keep the freshness, elegance and acidity in the must and thus give the wines the signature of each vineyard.
These Chablis do not come across as puffery, nor are they soft-spoken. They are honest wines from honest people with a great flair for great wines.
Born in Quebec in 1973, Patrick Piuze is considered by many Burgundy connoisseurs to be the new rock star in Chablis. Once inspired by an encounter with Marc Chapoutier, the Franco-Canadian, who was henceforth a wine enthusiast, went through a career from harvest worker to internationally sought-after winemaker in no time.
Since the 2010 vintage, Patrick Piuze has permanently established himself as another top winemaker in Chablis alongside Raveneau and Dauvissat. However, he was not born into the world of winemaking. His first experience with wine was when he met Marc Chapoutier on a skiing holiday at a young age. The fire in him was awakened and he travelled to Australia, South Africa and Israel to work at various wineries.
