Producers: Biondi Santi
Since the 14th century, the Biondi Santi family has been cultivating wine in Tuscany and having made a significant contribution to the region. It was a quantum leap when Ferruccio Biondi Santi created the great Brunello di Montalcino in 1888, modeled after Barolo (100% Nebbiolo). The first wine that was made in Tuscany from only one grape variety. He isolated the Sangiovese Grosso clone, which is still the basis for the worldwide fame of Brunello, and is the only wine producer in the world with a clone bearing his name: BBS 11, Brunello Biondi Santi 11. Until the 1950s The winery was the only Brunello producer, but then fell due to many new interpretations of the old wine a little forgotten. In the 1960s, rumors of wines of incredible longevity burst from the cellars of a producer in Montalcino called Biondi-Santi to the outside world. At that time, legendary vertical tastings with age-old vintages were organized to demonstrate the marathon shelf life of its wines. The fabulous 1891 Riserva by Ferruccio Biondi Santi was indeed tasted by only a few, but praised by all.
Under Franco, the grandson of Ferruccio, Tenuta Il Greppo - a magical place for Brunello lovers - found its way back to its old class from the 1970s and today is the epitome of this magical wine. Biondi-Santi produces extremely traditional brunellos of clay plots in prime locations in the narrow Brunello-DOCG area. It defies all fashions and trends and leaves the wine to this day - as always - mature in large, old wooden barrels. Many other producers switched the expansion to the Italian 225 liter barriques. For Biondi-Santi, one only says: "Sangiovese is naturally rich in tannins and does not need the aggressive tannins of new wood!"
