Due to the lack of a large number of quality winemakers in Maranges, it is not easy to define a typicality for the wines of the village. A little bit the Maranges reminds of 1er Crus in the middle of the vineyards in Beaune, already young rather reserved in tannin, silky, very easy to like.

Vinification / aging

The vineyards are cultivated without the use of pesticides and herbicides and are regularly ploughed. In the cellar the brothers work carefully and keep the use of wood within limits. On average, both the red and white wines see about a quarter of new wood. Since 2012, the domain has been using larger barrels in addition to the traditional 228 l pièces for the white wines. Furthermore, the Domaine is going to withdraw its wines into stainless steel tanks (white wines) or concrete tanks (red wines) after 12 months of ageing in wooden barrels and to continue ageing there for 6 months.

History

In this age of rapidly available information worldwide, success stories rarely remain undiscovered for long. Even the Domaine Bachelet-Monnot, founded in 2005, received the highest praise from some wine critics almost from the start. Stephen Tanzer places the wines of the two brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet at the very top of his White Burgundy pyramid. He writes: "The Bachelets make wines that are classically styled, emphasizing the inherent freshness, complexity and minerality in each cuvée... This is a new producer to follow".

The Domaine Bachelet-Monnot is located in a typical Burgundy village in Dezize les Maranges, less than 8 km southwest of Chassagne-Montachet on the Cote d'Or. The still young domain was founded in January 2005 by the committed winemaking brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet. They inherited their passion for wine and their entrepreneurial spirit from their grandfather Bernard and their father Jean Francois. After 7 years of oenology studies and numerous experiences with French and foreign winegrowers, they now cultivate 20 hectares of vineyards divided into

1 ha of Grand Cru vineyards / 12 ha of Premier Cru vineyards / 7 ha of Village vineyards in the communes of Puligny-Montrachet, Santenay, Saint Aubin, Meursault, Maranges and Dezize les Maranges. Conscious of the unique richness of this terroir, they know that only a great wine can succeed, with thorough cultivation of the soil and constant observation of the vines in order to optimise the natural resources.

To achieve this, the vines are worked without pesticides or other chemical means and the soil is regularly aerated. The first control of yield reduction begins with stopping excessive budding. The average age of the red vines is 50 years and the average age of the white vines is 40 years.
